Halfway

We've reached the halfway point of the semester. What has been your biggest surprise so far? Biggest disappointment? Best accomplishment? What are your thoughts as you think about next semester and what classes to take? Please respond by noon, Monday, Oct. 22.

  1. The biggest surprise of the semester so far is how not stressed I am. I thought for sure that I would have had a mental breakdown by now but I am handling the stress of college really well. I would say my best accomplishment would be how well I have adjusted to college life and living on my room. I have always considered myself independent but now I really get to live on my own. I determine when I eat, when I sleep, when I study, when I do laundry ect... I am slightly confused about next semester because I am deciding between forensic science and criminal justice. Even though the classes will be the same for winter and spring 2012, I am worried about my college career after that. I hope that the rest of this semester and next will help me to better determine my major.

  2. The biggest surprise I have experienced involves both the work load and study time. Unlike high school, college gives you a lot more time to work on your classes and assignments. When I first started college, I thought I would have to study from dawn to dusk, but as the weeks have progressed I have realized that consistent study habits are all that you need. I think the biggest disappointment for me involves the lack of clubs and intramurals which interest me. Although I have this disappointment, I believe that I may start a club or two of my own next year to make up for this loss. My biggest accomplishment involves how well I have adapted to both college life and studies. My confidence and independence continue to grow as the weeks progress. Although this first semester has gone rather well so far, I am definitely nervous about next semester when we really start to get further into topics and more is expected of me. I just hope that this first semester will prepare me well for the semesters to come.

  3. I find that the most astounding thing is what activities we have to do in some of our classes. I never knew that your social life was important to a university of 3,500 students and that basically anything is possible for receiving a grade. I believe that when Sophomore year begins school will really begin to feel like college since there won't be these kiddie activities that we must participate in.
My biggest disappointment is how a lot of the staff are not professional. They break appointments with very immature excuses or they have no ability to realize when to act like any other person you come into contact or to be a wise adult who has lived longer than you (mentor). Teachers are supposed to set the example for the students under their wing and the same with the overall faculty. For some of the issues I have had with some teachers, I don't think it is worth paying the school for. If someone isn't there to act professionally or teach in a proper manner then they should not be teaching. Being 15 minutes late to every single class is not ever okay. They're not god, they are like the rest of us and I'm not paying to deal with someone with a god complexion. They are supposed to teach as we students are supposed to be on time to learn.

For my best accomplishment, I would have to agree that I'm not getting burned-out as easily as I did in high school. If I'm frustrated I can simply walk around or move to a different location and take a deep breath, whereas in high school you are stuck in the same 6-7 rooms each day. As for semester 2...I have no idea what predict. I am just waiting for the 2012-2013 semester to begin.

  4. My biggest surprise so far was the dramatic change in my schedule. At Madonna, day can start at 9 a.m. with several 3 hour class that can end whenever. Coming from an 8:00 to 2:45 day every day in highschool, with 45 minute classes is a radical change. I do enjoy the freedom that comes with this, but have also beared the responsibilty of being on time as well. My best accomplishment so far is my grades, that I will continue to maintain as the semester wears on. As of right now, I will be taking the next level courses for writing, biology, and chemistry.

  5. My biggest surprise so far in this semester is how I had this idea that all myt professors were going to be all boring, when really all my teachers are fun and easy to get along with. I personally like it because it is easier to communicate with the teachers about your assignments and so on. It makes college a lot more enjoyable to attend. My biggest dissapointment so far is my math class. I basically teach myself how to do the problems in that class. I don't really understand the methods she tries to teach us, and I feel more comfortable learning it on my own. My best accomplishment is how quickly it took me to become comfortable with the atmosphere of college life. It is easier to manage my time, and the people are very easy to get along with, including the teachers. My thoughts about next semester is that I know I am going to take more classes because soccer season will end by that time. I will be taking chemistry, the second biology course, the second writing course, and pre calculus. Hopefully, with soccer not being in the way, it will be easier to exceed in these courses.

  6. biggest surprise, biggest disappointment biggest achievement...next semester?

The most surprising part of this experience so far is the dramatic difference in what my perception of college was, and what it actually ended up being. It isn't as serious or "prestigious" as I anticipated. My biggest disappoint would have to be the fact that I was only able to take eight credits this semester, although I look forward to taking eleven this winter. As for my biggest accomplishment, I feel that I've taken my first semester well and fairly stress free. Come winter semester, I will continue taking science classes, and finally break ground with a class focusing on forensics.

  7. Biggest surprise so far this year now that we are halfway through the first semester is that, this semester has gone by fast and I am surprised how different the college life is compared to a normal day life. Also that the professors have surprised me in the different styles they teach as they really want the students to learn and succeed in their courses. Biggest disappointment is that I haven’t gotten off to a strong start so far and I need to pick it up a little and get back on track. For next semester I will be taking more classes and that means that I will have to work harder but without soccer I will have more time to do so. But so far this semester is turning out to be a great experience and I hope it grows from here.

  8. I think the biggest surprise for me, so far, has to be the fact that I made so many friends. My worst fear was that I wouldn't exactly mix in with the crowd; I had already recognized the fact that I wouldn't fit in. My best accomplishment has been the grade I got on my Chemistry test, which was gladly an A. My biggest disappointment...well...I'm not so sure I've identified any disappointments just yet. And picking classes? Well I'm mainly following whatever path I chose and the advice I received from my two advisers.

  9. My biggest surprise so far is that I'm getting pretty used to it. I was the girl that . I do have a lot on my plate with 16 credits, two jobs, and a social life and yet I still manage to do pretty well in my classes. I feel really good that I am able to do so much at once but I constantly worry and fear the failure that can easily strike with this hectic schedule.

As for a disappointment, I haven't really found one so far. I mean, it's college, the only person you can really blame for things is yourself.

For next semester, as you've seen Neal, I already registered for my classes. I am looking forward to my forensic class because unlike the other classes I've taken thus far, it's not a prerequisite.
