Your thoughts

You have almost made it through your first semester of college and survived this collaborative studies experience. What did you like best and least about our time together in UNV 1010, WRT 1010 and BIO 1030? (Jessie loses two points; one for each bunny ear finger and Kriebel flunks the class.)
Please respond to this final post by Monday, Nov. 21.

  1. For University 1010, what I liked most had been the ability to ask Nicole and Cassie questions whenever I had a question. What I liked least was paying for a class I haven't learned anything in. I compare it to a "waiting place" with the perception that we never really did anything but yammer for an hour an a half every so often.

For Writing 1010, what I liked the most had been having to be forced to write in the manner that I speak. I have been in honors/AP English classes so long that I never learned how to write any kind of paper that allows you to just be "you" without looking at a thesaurus a thousand times. What I liked least was having projects that didn't really pertain to English, such as the descriptive videos...I don't understand what it did for us students in the long run even though English was applied when we wrote a script. I believe the method behind presenting a written format through video and a paper had been to see how to use different sorts of media to get a point across but at the same time...I don't see how to compare the results.

For Biology 1030, what I liked most was the enthusiasm of the teacher and her kindness if you had been struggling. She did a great job trying to keep all students interested in the material (not that this is anyway expected in college). Personally, for me this class let me see my major in a different perspective...that it is mainly memorizing than really understanding the material because the syllabus had been so dense. I feel as I studied for the test and then whenever I have Biology again I won't really remember what I learned because there was so much information in addition to the big gap for next time I have a Biology related course.

  2. I enjoyed UNV1010 because we had the chance to get to know everyone, and we also got to be in a more relaxed setting. I enjoyed WRT1010 despite Neal's attacks on me. I actually got something from the class and I enjoy how the class IS taught. For Biology1030 I have been doing well and my tests grades are good. I enjoy the class even though it's a lot of work.

  3. I really liked unv 1010 because we got to know new people and got to know them well. It wasn't as intenese as some of my other classes, and I felt at ease in the class. What I didn't like most was the Wildlife refuge, I feel like I didn't learn anything except for how to kill buckthorn. All in all I enjoy unv 1010 very much!

  4. UNV 1010 was kind of a waste of money. We spent a lot of time going over study habits and tips, as well as ice breakers with people we've already gotten to know. Why should we revise how we do things if what we do, already works for us? In a way, like Sam said, it was pretty relaxed and you were able to kick back. However, I feel that it was unnecessary. I did really appreciate getting to know Cassie and Nicole though! :)

WRT 1010 was an eye opener. I really liked the professor and how he made it fun. Thanks Neal! I didn't like how we weren't given any guidlines on papers. In my high school career, I grew accustomed to AP format and using thesaurus.com like no other. Turns out I lost a very important thing along those years: my voice. Neal pressured us to write what we thought in the words we'd use. That's something I'd like to work on more.

BIO 1030 was a pretty rough class. Veronica, or Baby V as I like to call her (she just doesn't know it yet), made things simpler by giving real life examples. One thing that also stuck out to me was that she kept in touch with her students and the ones that needed it most, she offered study advice. BIO 1030 reminded me of the stuff I learned in my 9th grade biology class, just a little more in depth. Overall, it wasn't so bad and neither was my first semester!

  5. I would have to say that overall I do not believe that UNV 1010 is a very useful class for me. However, I can see how it would be if I were not to already to have established time management and note taking skills. But I really do like how I have classes with the same people. This forced me to get to know people and form relationships with them.

  6. I have really enjoyed my classes this symester for a plethora of reasons. The UNV1010 class although sometimes a little repetative, has given me a better understanding of myself and of what kind of career I want to pursue. My favorite assignment in the UNV1010 class was the career research project. This assignment made me delve into my mind and find what exactly I wanted to do with my degree in Environmental Science. Having Neal as our WRT1010 instructure has been a blast. His engaging attitude and joking nature have made the class much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Although I have learned a lot in his class, I would have liked less video assignments and a little more creative writing assignments. Veronica's Bio 1030 class has also been fantastic. She is also a very engaging teacher and her enthusiasm and geunine helpfulness have made the classes fly by. I really enjoy this class; however, I do feel that there is a lot of memoriztion going on that I won't remember next semester. Over all, the teachers have really turned school into not just something manditory, but something fun.

  8. For me, University 1010 was possibly the biggest waste of time and a waste of money, in my opinion. Why would I want to attend a class that does not have to do with anything with what I would like to do in the future? I feel as though this class should be an option for people who do not know what they want to do in the future. What I do like about the class is the teachers and that is possibly the only thing I like in the class.

In Writing 1010, I came into the class thinking it was going to be boring and the teacher would add to that 100 percent, but little did I know how much I would enjoy that class because of a couple of things. The teacher was one of them and the other thing was how active the class is. You are constantly interacting and doing something, so it never gets boring, which persoanlly is what I prefer that a class should be like. What I do not like about the class is the papers we have to do in them, because I personally was never the best at writing papers, and I never had great teachers to help me out on those papers.

In Biology 1030, I personally enjoy bbiology, so I do enjoy the class. The teacher is nice as well and is very energetic, so it makes the class interesting. Although I am not doing as well as I can be doing, I still have to try my best to do better because this and other sciences are what I need for my future. What I do not like about the class is that there is a lot of memorizing for just one test, but I suppose I just have to get used to it.

  9. Over all, the classes I took were all beneficial in the sense that I was able to see the same people enough to get to know them on different levels and in different atmospheres. UNV 1010 seemed a bit repetitive with information that I was already aware of. Although I enjoyed the relaxed class setting, I didn't exactly take any needed information from the course. BIO 1030 has been a bit of a challenge with the different syllabus format, although the engagement that Veronica has with her students is great. WRT 1010 has been beneficial in the sense of getting the class to talk through voice with narrative, reflective and descriptive pieces.

  10. Though I didn't believe I would exactly enjoy these classes I had a ton of fun. What I liked least about all of the classes was the trip to the Wildlife Refuge. In WRT 1010 I know I'm learning a ton of knowledge; how to craft better sentences, how to survive without using words such as is or like. What I like best about this class would have to be the constructive criticism as I'm working, so I fix a few mistakes beforehand. In UNV 1010 I liked all of the activities we did; such as getting our arms out of a knot, or finding out our personality types. In BIO 1030 I liked the fact that our notes had a type of skeleton, rather than just having to do our notes straight on a piece of paper. I really liked that our classes also tied together as a collaborative cluster; so we could work in the same type of thing in different ways.

  11. As the semester is comming to a close and my thoughts about how this semester has gone, well its like a rollar coaster and it has its ups and downs. University 1010 to me seemed like a waste of time thinking that a class that we did not really need to graduate, but while taking the class it helps organize your thoughts and get help by asking questions about any problems you may have. BIO 1030 I honestly do not have a good feeling about the class it does not interest me at all as we take notes for 3 hours and I rarely learn anything from the class most of the learning I have to learn on my own. WRT1010 has been an interesting class the different styles of writing we have learned and the critizing we recieve about how bad our papers are even though none of us are journal majors. I've never liked writing papers and dont really care for writing them; probably never will.
